Tatiana Bachkirova - Development of Self in Action: A theory that can underpin developmental coaching Development of Self in Action (DSA) is a theory that has been developed specifically for coaching on the basis of exploring the concept of Self in psychology, philosophy and other disciplines. As a result, this theory provides an explanation of the individual functioning, desired changes and development that can make developmental coaching a rigorous, theory-based approach to practice. In this keynote Tatiana will offer an overview of the key concepts and philosophical assumptions that were further developed in the second edition of her book Developmental Coaching: Working with the Self, which was published this year. Tatiana Bachkirova - Applying DSA theory in coaching practice In this workshop we will explore how DSA (Development of Self in Action) theory can be used in practice by considering three main mechanisms of developmental coaching. This approach does not require the use of instruments for identifying clients’ stages of development; instead it aims to differentiate ‘developmental themes’ to inform coaches’ interventions. Participants will be able to experiment with some ideas of this approach to developmental coaching. There will be an opportunity to further question this theory and approach to practice on the basis of your own experiences.
Oliver Robinson and Josie Fenton - The Unretiring: An evaluation of a coaching programme to support the retirement transition The Unretiring learning journey is a series of eight online courses that offer psychological and practical support for the challenges of retirement, self-employment, entrepreneurship, practical business advice, the digital marketplace and the gig economy. Each course includes workshops, peer discussion and written assignments. Through interactive learning, participants will develop awareness, confidence and skills to create and act upon a rewarding unretirement plan. The evaluation project is exploring whether the pilot course is experienced as personally transformative by attendees and if it has measurable effects on wellbeing. The short talk will briefly describe the theoretical background and structure of the Unretiring programme and summarise the results of the pilot evaluation study.
Jennifer Garvey Berger - The paradox and practice of Growth Edge Coaching: Jennifer has spent the last twenty years exploring what she calls Growth Edge Coaching—a form of developmental coaching that invites clients to the edge of their current meaning making and then begins to help them expand that edge. In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore the core paradox that has surprised Jennifer over all this time, and we’ll play with three foundational practices that help each of us walk to our edges, the most fertile place for growth.
